UK prepares to deploy Chinooks to eastern Mali

15 June 2018

A 100-strong UK military construction team is deploying to Mali to prepare for the arrival of three Royal Air Force (RAF) Chinook heavy-lift helicopters.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) released on 13 June photographs of the personnel disembarking from a RAF C-17 transport aircraft at an airbase that could be identified as the one at Niamey international airport in Niger.

UK defence sources told Jane’s on 15 June that the construction team, which includes a mix of RAF and British Army personnel, is currently en route to Gao in eastern Mali, where they will begin setting up a forward operating site that includes prefabricated hangers for the RAF helicopters.
