China’s defence budget in 2018 will increase by 8.1% to CNY1.107 trillion (USD175 billion), the official Xinhua news agency reported on 5 March. The increase – announced at the start of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing – is slightly higher than the 7.6% and 7.0% growth recorded in the defence budgets of 2016 and 2017, which, according official figures, were CNY886.9 billion and CNY1.044 trillion respectively.
A report on the 2018 budget published by the Ministry of Finance on 5 March states that “special focus” must be made to “strengthen the modernisation of national defence and the military”.
