The US Department of State has approved a prospective sale to Sweden of a Patriot Configuration-3+ air defence package under the Foreign Military Sales mechanism.
The Swedish government selected the Patriot solution over the Eurosam (Thales and MBDA) consortium’s SAMP/T (Sol-Air Moyenne Portée/Terrestre: surface-to-air medium range/land) offering in November 2017, and subsequently authorised the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to begin negotiations for a Patriot procurement. At the time, the contract value was expected to exceed SEK10 billion (approximately USD1.2 billion), according to the FMV.
Sweden has requested four Patriot Configuration-3+ Modernized Fire Units comprising: four AN/MPQ-65 phased array radar sets, four AN/MSQ-132 engagement control stations; nine antenna mast groups; 12 M903 launching stations; Raytheon 100 Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missile-TBM (GEM-T) missiles; 200 Lockheed Martin Patriot Advanced Capabilty-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles; and four Electrical Power Plants (EPP) III.
