A Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter operated by the Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana: FAM) crashed on 16 February, killing 14.
The Black Hawk came down in the town of Santiago Jamiltepec in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca while performing an earthquake damage assessment flight. None of the casualties were on board the helicopter, with all 14 said to be civilians camping in the open after the earthquake.
No cause has been attributed to the incident, but it was reported that the helicopter was trying to land on a disused patch of land when it encountered ‘brownout’ conditions as dirt and debris were circulated into the air from the rotor downwash.
