The Direction Générale de l'Armament (DGA), the French procurement agency, on 12 February awarded a production contract to Nexter for the Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôle Léger (Light Multirole Armoured Vehicle, VBMR-L). The new vehicle will replace the in-service Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé (VAB) from 2022, with the Loi de Programmation Militaire 2019-2025 military funding programme released on 8 February stating that 489 VBMR-L vehicles are to be initially procured by 2025. Total orders by 2030 could reach 978 vehicles.
The 4x4 vehicle will be manufactured at the Nexter Systems Roanne facility alongside the French Army’s future Engin Blindé de Reconnaissance et de Combat (Armoured Combat and Reconnaissance Vehicle) Jaguar and Griffon vehicles, which are also part of the Scorpion modernisation programme.
