Collective Wisdom Technology Co Ltd, a new Sino-Italian joint venture (JV), displayed at the Singapore Airshow 2018 exhibition a new rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with potentially a wide array of defence, search-and-rescue, and other security-related applications.
Called Spider 103, the recently developed 1.2 m-long platform has been described by the JV as an “aerial robot” designed to be an “intelligent, high-altitude monitoring platform with long endurance”.
The platform, which is 0.8 m high and 0.6 m wide, has a maximum take-off weight of 65 kg, which includes approximately 30 kg of fuel and a 7 kg payload.
Design team specialists claim that the Spider 103 is not only a better performer but also cheaper to operate than other similar vehicles in its class, adding that the UAV also has a smaller footprint and can operate in austere environments. The platform can be as far as 50 km away from its main signal control point and still maintain an effective data link, according to the company.
The UAV can reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h, which it achieves through the use of a counter-rotating blade configuration. This counter-rotation system reduces the overall radius of the vehicle, as well as eliminates the need for a tail rotor.
