Vietnam’s fourth Gepard frigate arrives in Cam Ranh Bay

23 January 2018

Key Points

  • Vietnam has received its fourth Gepard 3.9-class frigate
  • Platform expected to play instrumental role in the country’s anti-submarine efforts

A fourth Russian-built modified Gepard 3.9 (Project 11661E)-class guided-missile frigate ordered for the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) Navy has arrived home.

Vessel movement analysis by Jane’s via the IHS Markit’s AISLive portal indicates that a semi-submersible heavy load carrier that was transporting the frigate arrived at Cam Ranh Bay on 20 January. The 151 m carrier, Rolldock Star , departed the Russian port of Novorossiysk in early December 2017 with the frigate as its cargo.

Rolldock Star is the same semi-submersible that delivered the PAVN’s third Gepard 3.9-class frigate in October 2017.
