14 January 2018

Key Points

  • BAE Systems’ ADL can launch the same missiles as the Mk 41 VLS
  • ADL could enable LCS and FFG(X) to fire multiple variants of missiles

BAE Systems is offering an adaptable deck launcher (ADL) to enable US Navy (USN) surface combatants, aircraft carriers, and large deck amphibious ships to use the same common modular missile launcher across the fleet.

The ADL was originally designed, when loaded with the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), as to be installed on aircraft carriers to use to defend the large ships from missile threats. The launchers could be placed one on the port side and another on the starboard side sponsons.
