US Navy denies Columbia submarine technological, cost, and schedule risk

The US Navy (USN) says its Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine replacement fleet for the Ohio-class ships is on track to meet schedule, cost, and technological estimates or requirements despite a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that questions the status of all three.

“Additional development and testing are required to demonstrate the maturity of several Columbia-class submarine technologies that are critical to performance, including the Integrated Power System (IPS), nuclear reactor, common missile compartment, and propulsor and related coordinated stern,” GAO said its report, Columbia Class Submarine, Immature Technologies Present Risks to Achieving Cost, Schedule, and Performance Goals , released on 21 December.
