President Donald Trump’s National Security Strategy (NSS) suggested the US government will provide less assistance to foreign countries and instead encourage private sector investment abroad.
The United States "will promote a development model that partners with countries that want progress, consistent with their culture, based on free market principles, fair and reciprocal trade, private sector activity, and rule of law," according to the NSS, which was published on 18 December.
The White House "will shift away from a reliance on assistance based on grants to approaches that attract private capital and catalyse private sector activity".
