The Canadian government launched the first large vessel to be built under its National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) in Vancouver, British Colombia, on 8 December. The ship, Sir John Franklin , is one of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OSFV) being constructed by Seaspan for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG).
The vessel will be used by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to monitor fish stocks and conduct other oceanographic tasks. It is 63.4 m in length, has a beam of 6.16 m, displaces 3,247 tonnes, and is capable of speeds of up to 12.5 kt.
Seaspan was selected in 2011 as the shipbuilder for the CAD8 billion (USD6.2 billion) non-combat portion of the NSS.
