Common by design: Norway and Germany partner to evolve next-generation Type 212CD submarine

The Norwegian government’s desire to reap the benefits of a common submarine design has provided the catalyst to a long-term strategic partnership with Germany. Richard Scott reports

On 2 February this year the Norwegian government decided to pursue a strategic co-operation with Germany covering the procurement of new submarines, together with joint training and exercises, a shared spares inventory, and co-operative maintenance and lifetime management. The move was publicly announced the following day by then minister of defence Ine Eriksen Søreide, who at the same time outlined the wider ambition for a long-term partnership with Germany on the procurement and support of naval materiel.
