German small arms manufacturer SIG Sauer has withdrawn from the tender to replace the G36 assault rifle. The company claims the technical requirements for the new rifle are tailored to G36 producer Heckler & Koch and thus sees little or no chance of winning the competition. Heckler & Koch is competing with the HK443.
“We will not participate in a tender by submitting a bid for a competition in which the general requirements are clearly tailored to one competitor,” said SIG Sauer managing director Franz von Stauffenberg, adding that the company had no intention of risking its good name as a mere placeholder in the competition.
