Argentina starts inquiry on possible loss of submarine ARA San Juan

27 November 2017

Argentina appears to be starting inquiries over its likely loss of TR 1700-class submarine ARA San Juan , which disappeared on 15 November while en route back to its base at Mar del Plata.

Two separate hydrophones detected underwater sound anomalies, consistent with an explosion, in the expected path of the submarine soon after its last communication on 15 November, when it reported an issue with some of its batteries.

The news so far has led to various accusations and requests for investigations. Some official sources suggested President Mauricio Macri may replace all Argentine Navy (Armada República Argentina: ARA) commanding officers, but instead Macri announced that the priority was to find the submarine, try rescuing its crew, find out what happened, and then consider potential removals or punishments.
