Australia has announced new investment to boost the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in defence.
The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) said on 21 November that the funding will be worth AUD10 million (USD7.5 million) over 10 years and is intended to “inspire and attract” defence research proposals from SMEs.
Australian Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said the funding – under a programme called the ‘Small Business Innovation Research for Defence’ (SBIRD) – will be focused on “getting our SMEs quickly off the starting block so Defence can capitalise on their expansive potential for innovation and research capabilities”.
