Naval forces from Brazil, Chile, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay are helping Argentina search for its lost submarine, ARA San Juan , which was last reported to be on patrol on 15 November in the Southern Atlantic.
The diesel-electric TR-1700 submarine San Juan and its crew of 44 were transiting to their home port in Mar del Plata from a base in southern Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The vessel was scheduled to arrive on 19 November and was last seen on 15 November in the San Jorge Gulf.
The US Navy (USN) sent a P-8A Poseidon multimission maritime aircraft and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) quickly dispatched P-3 research aircraft to assist Argentina with the search near the submarine’s last known location soon after the vessel was reported missing.
