- Congressional watchdogs believe the F-35 programme is facing sustainment challenges
- Much of this is due to timely and sufficient funding
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) believes the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme is facing sustainment challenges that are affecting warfighter readiness, according to a 26 October report.
GAO said these challenges are largely the result of sustainment plans that do not fully include essential requirements or aligned, as in timely and sufficient, funding. The Pentagon is taking steps to address some challenges, GAO said, but without more comprehensive plans and aligned funding, Pentagon risks being unable to fully leverage the F-35’s capabilities and sustain a rapidly expanding fleet.
