The alliance’s relations with Moscow remain as strained as ever following the latest meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) on 26 October where the two sides faced off on nearly every issue discussed, from pre-exercise briefings to Afghanistan. There was particular criticism on NATO’s part of Russia’s recent ‘Zapad 2017’ exercise.
“The allies made clear that the scale and geographical scope of ‘Zapad’ significantly exceeded what Russia had previously announced,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters after the meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels. “Many [allies] said there was a discrepancy between what Russia gave the NRC weeks ago versus what took place.
