The Russian Ministry of Defence has announced that it will be closing the headquarters of the Caspian Flotilla in Astrakhan and moving to a new location in Dagestan.
The new location has yet to be officially disclosed, but Jane’s understands that it will more than likely be the town of Kaspiysk.
While Makhachkala is the second port of the flotilla, Kaspiysk – currently a marine and amphibious training centre – is an obvious candidate due to the large space available to the south of the town. There is also a large airport located nearby.
Makhachkala does have a large port, but it can no longer cope with the growing fleet of ships the Caspian Flotilla is receiving.
