Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has said that it plans to earmark USD6.6 million for research into the development of an upgrade programme for its fleet of M60A3 main battle tanks (MBTs).
The ministry has chosen the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) to lead the programme, and envisages that two prototypes will be ready by 2019. The full upgrade programme is expected to begin in 2020.
The Republic of China (RoC) Army confirmed that the upgrade will focus on replacing the tank’s current 105 mm M68 rifled gun with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon. The hydraulic system for the turret, the ballistic fire-control computer and other systems are also set to be upgraded.
