The South Africa’s Department of Defence (DoD) recently released Annual Performance Plan document for 2017 indicates that more will be expected of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to meet the evolving strategic challenges at a time when funding continues to decrease in real terms.
The emerging challenges outlined in the plan include:
• An increase in protests in the run-up to the 2019 elections may require the SANDF to co-operate with the police service on a more regular basis.
• More naval operations could be required on the west coast of Africa to counter piracy and increase co-operation with Namibia and Angola.
