Japan launches second Asahi-class destroyer

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched a second Asahi-class destroyer on order for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

The 151 m vessel, to be designated JS Shiranui with pennant number 120 upon entering service, was launched on 12 October at MHI’s facilities in Nagasaki.

Shiranui is the second Asahi-class destroyer to be built by MHI. Its sister ship, Asahi (119), was launched in October 2016 and is currently scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with Shiranui expected to enter service with the JMSDF in 2019.
