DSEI 2017: Dragonfire laser turret makes its public debut

12 September 2017

A full-scale turreted version of the Dragonfire laser weapon demonstrator being built for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) was unveiled for the first time at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2017 exhibition in London.

The system is being developed under the GBP30 million (USD40 million) Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) Capability Demonstrator Programme (CDP) awarded in January to UK Dragonfire, a consortium led by MBDA under contract to the MoD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. Alongside MBDA, which is providing the system’s command and control (C2), weapon handling, and image processing capabilities, the consortium includes Leonardo, which is providing the system’s beam director, and QinetiQ, which is supplying the high-energy laser (HEL) itself.
