The European Defence Agency (EDA) will soon close a tender for a small study on a big idea: a new kind of laser for drone-mounted countermeasure defences. The goal is to move away from fibre optics for generating the beam, resulting in improved performance and a reduction in cost and other factors associated with the former.
Released on 15 July, the tender calls for a pre-feasibility study over one year into the critical components of military lasers and their use as wide-area sensor technologies on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs.) The study must also cover prototyping, intellectual property issues, a roadmap for implementation, and concepts for military scenarios.
