In interviews with Austrian media on 25 August, Defence Minister Hans Peter Doskozil proposed that a domestic industry cluster build the army's new light multirole helicopter.
Doskozil told the Kronen Zeitung newspaper that talks would be held with potential domestic companies, claiming Austria has the know-how and technology to develop its own helicopter. If these talks fail, an international request for proposals will be launched later this year, he said.
Doskozil told Austrian radio 12 helicopters "will surely not suffice".
In the Kronen Zeitung interview, he said plans to use the helicopters for civilian search and rescue were on hold pending the mid-October elections.
