The UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Defence Cyber School has hosted a cyber exercise featuring a fictitious attack on military communications equipment.
The event was created by Her Majesty’s Government Communications Centre (HMGCC) and held at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham on 11 August. It saw participants work to safeguard experimental geotracking equipment planned for the Future Soldier Vision (FSV) uniform design. As part of the scenario, a ‘hacktivist’ group hijacked the Internet of Things (IoT)-linked equipment through a so-called man-in-the-middle attack, where attackers covertly intercept communications between two parties.
The players lost contact with the soldiers who were being monitored through the equipment and had to work against the clock to re-establish communications, as well as reporting to military chiefs explaining why contact was lost and advising on how to respond to the attack within legal guidelines.
