Harris Corporation is on track to have a constellation of more than 60 satellites on orbit by the end of 2018 that will carry the company’s payload of a more advanced Automatic Identification System (AIS) capability to deliver real-time data on ship locations.
The system is currently providing navies not only the ability to track ships, but to discover who the ship belongs to, the type and flag of the vessel, and what ports the ship has visited.
Partnered with exactEarth, an AIS provider with eight satellites already in orbit, the 60 plus constellation will be able to see approximately 400,000 vessels at a time, a 100% increase from what exactEarth is providing today.
