Logos Technologies has flown a podded version of its Redkite wide area motion imagery (WAMI) sensor aboard a US Navy RQ-23 TigerShark unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The demonstration represents the first-time the Redkite pod has been operated on a UAV.
The NAVMAR Applied Sciences Corporation (NASC) TigerShark is the second Group 3 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that Redkite has been installed on. Earlier this year Logos installed and flew its ultra-lightweight WAMI sensor inside the payload bay of an Insitu Integrator UAV.
Over the course of the five-day demonstration, TigerShark, with the Redkite pod, flew for four to five hours per day anywhere from 3,000 ft above ground level (AGL) to 9,000 ft AGL. Imagery was streamed to a laptop ground control station as well as to personnel inside moving vehicles equipped with handheld tablet computers.
The pod variant of Redkite is less than a meter in length and less than .30 cm in width and 22.8 cm tall. Although the pod variant weighs about 15.87 kg, Logos made some changes to its prototype to bring the weight down to 14.0 kg, Doug Rombough, vice president of business development for Logos told Jane’s .
Logos is exploring how to make the Redkite pod even lighter by changing some of the components such as the material it is made from.
“I think [we] can get the podded version down to less than 25 lb (11.33 kg),” Rombough said.
Logos is not changing any of the optical or processing components as it cuts out weight, Josiah Gruber, airborne sensor lead and Redkite programme manager for Logos Technologies, told Jane’s .
