US systems and technology house Dynetics has been awarded a USD10.9 million sole-source contract by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, for the supply of GBU-69B Small Glide Munition (SGM) All-Up-Rounds (AURs) for deployment by US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) AC-130 gunships.
The contract, awarded on 19 June, covers the delivery of an initial 70 SGMs over a 12-month period, with an option for up to 30 more munitions. The company has previously received contracts for 70 AURs and 15 inert munitions/warheads for testing to validate the weapon and its integration. USSOCOM expects to procure approximately 1,000 SGM AURs over the next six years.
Developed by Dynetics using corporate internal research and development funding, SGM is a 60 lb (27.2 kg) class precision glide bomb that adopts a modular design enabling multiple common variants and significant design flexibility. By mounting the seeker nose section, tail kit, and wing assembly directly to the warhead case, the design enables different seekers, warheads, and other subsystems to be readily incorporated.
The baseline SGM incorporates a 36 lb blast-fragmentation warhead that can be detonated on impact or using a variable height of burst sensor. The munition offers an all-azimuth launch capability, and its deployable wing provides significant stand-off range resulting in a large weapon footprint and a corresponding increase in armed over-watch area.
GBU-69B includes a Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module GPS receiver, and a BAE Systems Distributed Aperture Semi-Active Laser Seeker adapted from the WGU-59/B Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System for terminal guidance. It also uses lattice control fins for aerodynamic stability and control, similar to the Dynetics-developed designs used on the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast and the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator weapons.
