During their final session on 28 June, lawmakers of the ruling Christian Democratic-Social Democratic coalition failed to agree on funding for a Heron TP leasing contract in the Bundestag's parliamentary budget committee. This comes only a few weeks after parliament received the go-ahead to debate funding Heron TP after a German court rejected General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc's legal challenge of the decision to lease the system from Israel.
The German Ministry of Defence (MoD) planned to lease five Heron TP unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) worth EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion), with the option to arm them at a later stage.
