Coca eradication programme in Peru's VRAEM to increase insurgent attacks against security forces, helicopters, and construction companies

The head of Peru's anti-drug agency Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo y Vida sin Drogas (DEVIDA), Carmen Macias, reported on 24 may that security forces will launch a coca-crop eradication programme in the VRAEM region.

The move was announced as part of the 2017-21 counter-narcotics strategy, which aims to eradicate 50% of Peru's existing coca crops and replace some of these with coffee and cacao, among others. The VRAEM region holds the largest concentration of coca crops in Peru, with authorities estimating that as much as 75% of Peru's total is located there.

Remnants of insurgent group Sendero Luminoso (SL) operate in the VRAEM along with drug trafficking groups.
