Aselsan has continued to develop incrementally its TASMUS (Taktik Saha Muhabere Sistemi) area communications system, which was first fielded in the early 2000s, and will deliver prototypes of the latest elements in 2018.
TASMUS is a secure multichannel network operating at the tactical/operational level from corps to battalion. It consists of three main elements: a wide area subsystem (WAS) of high-capacity line-of-sight radio links; local area subsystems (LAS) providing communications within headquarters; and mobile subsystems. The WAS can be connected to higher level networks by a variety of methods, including satellite communications.
The system had its first upgrade in 2010 as TASMUS G, with an Aselsan 8 Mbit/s Band III radio and a 24 Mbit/s Band IV radio from Selex. TASMUS G was only fielded to the Turkish 2nd Army in south east Anatolia.
The Turkish Armed Forces (TuAF) subsequently wished to upgrade and field the system to the the whole army. This upgrade, known as TASMUS G+, consists of some elements of what will ultimately be a completely refreshed system, TASMUS II. TASMUS II will be a completely internet protocol (IP)-based system compatible with both IP V4 and V6.
The principle component of the G+ upgrade is a new software defined radio (SDR), the GRC-5220. This is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based high-capacity Ethernet radio which uses 2x2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technologies. Operating in the Band III+ and IV frequency ranges it is made up of a baseband unit (BBU) and a radio frequency unit (RFU). The operating band is selected by changing the RFU.
The BBU is located in a shelter, or in future in a carrying case, with the RFU on a mast. These can be separated by up to 1 km if the RFU is powered by the BBU, but this can be extended to more than 4 km if powered by a separate source.
