Kitware has developed a computer vision-based approach to providing situational awareness (SA) to squad level dismounted units.
Speaking at Xponential 2017 in Dallas, Texas, Keith Fieldhouse, Kitware's assistant director of computer vision, explained that the company's THREAT-X concept utilises the feeds from cameras mounted on unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as well as soldier-borne sensors to "generate a heat map of threats in the battlespace".
Fieldhouse said that the company has worked with a number of partners from academia and industry with an aim of providing 21st Century SA capabilities to a rifle squad operating in various terrains.
