A recently decommissioned United States Coast Guard (USCG) ship is to be transferred to Vietnam, information published by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) shows. The transaction is the first known defence deal between the two countries since the US fully lifted military sanctions on Vietnam in 2016.
The Hamilton-class high-endurance cutter USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722) was officially withdrawn from USCG service on 18 April. According to the USCG, the 115 m vessel was decommissioned after nearly 50 years of service as part of USCG recapitalisation efforts at a ceremony in Honolulu.
The USCG added that the US State Department is "co-ordinating the transfer of Morgenthau through the Foreign Assistance Act.
