US DoD begins nuclear review with eye on Russia

17 April 2017

The Pentagon has begun its Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) as a host of modernisation programmes are all set to soon begin, and questions about Russian missiles and doctrine loom.

Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on 17 April "directed the commencement of the review, which will be led by the deputy secretary of defence and the vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and include interagency partners".

White said the "process will culminate in a final report to the president by the end of the year".

On 27 January President Donald Trump directed Mattis to begin an NPR to report on the US nuclear deterrent.
