12 April 2017

Key Points

  • The EPAA network is designed to deal with ballistic missile threats from the Middle East but must now address a two-fold challenge closer to home
  • This challenge consists of Russian ballistic and cruise missile threats

Planners are considering reorienting the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) missile defence system to cover potential threats from Russia as well as the Middle East, according to a US European Command (EUCOM) official.

Defences are currently predicated on US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyers armed with Standard Missile 3 interceptors and homeported out of Rota in Spain, although shore-based facilities are in development in Poland and Romania.
