After a pause in the programme, production of Increment 1 of the US Navy's (USN's) Advanced Explosive Ordnance Disposal Robotic System (AEODRS) is set to commence later in 2017, with an initial fielding of the capability in 2018.
"AEODRS will be our first autonomous robotic system," Jim Ryan, US Department of Defense Joint Service Explosive Ordnance Disposal (JSEOD) programme manager, said at the NDIA 2017 Ground Robotics Capabilities Conference.
AEODRS will be an open architecture system designed to easily adapt and grow with technology. The focus will be on the development of a common architecture, autonomy, and modularity, Ryan said.
Increment 1 is the smallest of the proposed capabilities, weighing less than 35 lb (15.87 kg), designed to be backpack portable and conduct reconnaissance mission and support manoeuvre forces.
