China has said that it will not participate in a UN conference aimed at negotiating a ban on nuclear weapons. "After careful consideration, China has decided not to participate in the new round of negotiations," said Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) spokesperson Hua Chunying on 20 March, referring to the UN conference scheduled to begin on 27 March in New York.
"This is a choice made to maintain the current international arms control and disarmament regime and move ahead nuclear disarmament in a gradual and incremental way," Hua said, adding that "it demonstrates China's responsible attitude towards maintaining global strategic balance and stability".
