10 March 2017

The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa: FAP) has taken delivery of an initial four AN/AAQ-28(V) Litening AT Block II airborne navigation and targeting pods upgraded to the Litening G4 standard by original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Northrop Grumman, the Portuguese Ministry of National Defence told Jane's on 8 March.

A new tranche of three modernised pods will be received shortly, while a final five systems will be received in early 2018, the ministry added.

A direct commercial sale contract worth USD22.7 million was awarded to Northrop Grumman by the FAP on 19 August 2015 for the upgrade of the 12 Litening pods, which were acquired in 2008.

Logistics support for the upgraded pods will be delivered between 2019 and 2022.

The systems are fielded by the Lockheed Martin F-16AM/BM fighters of squadrons 201 ('Falcões') and 301 ('Jaguares'), both part of Operational Group 51 based at Monte Real Air Base No 5.
