Western Australian naval shipbuilder Austal has inaugurated a facility dedicated to its Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement (PPB-R) project, it was announced on 8 March.
The new facility, which is located in Naval Base in Henderson near to the company's headquarters and other Austal shipbuilding sites, was officially opened by Christopher Pyne, Australia's defence industry minister.
Austal said it will start building the PPB-R vessels at the 10,500 m 3 facility from late April 2017, with deliveries scheduled from 2018 to 2023. Sustainment of the vessels will be carried out by Austal from its facilities in Cairns, Queensland.
Austal won the AUD305 million (USD228 million) PPB-R contract in May 2016.
