Finland is buying 16 ex-Dutch engineering tanks based on the Leopard 1 main battle tank (MBT) chassis the country's Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 20 February.
The deal is Finland's second procurement of surplus equipment in February aimed at significantly boosting both the tactical and operational mobility of its armoured units.
Valued at EUR8.2 million (USD8.6 million) the deal includes eight armoured recovery vehicles (ARVs) and eight armoured engineering vehicles (AEVs). The contract includes minor modification work to the vehicles, with deliveries scheduled to take place in 2018 and 2019. While Finland has operated the Leopard 2 for a number of years, this marks the first time a Leopard 1-based vehicle would have been accepted into Finnish service.
