USCG will not re-activate Polar Sea icebreaker

The US Coast Guard (USCG) finished Material Condition Assessment inspections of its inactive heavy icebreaker Polar Sea and concluded it would not re-activate the vessel owing to the significant costs and long timeframe needed, the service told Jane's.

Naval Sea Systems Command's assessment, which concluded in December, inspected all of Polar Sea 's components such as wiring, structure, equipment, and machinery for physical condition and viability.
