German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch has unveiled a modular rifle, the HK433, chambered in 5.56x45 mm. It will be proposed to the Bundeswehr as a replacement for the currently issued G36 rifle.
This is the fourth rifle family being offered by the Oberndorf-based manufacturer after the G36, HK416, and HK417 weapons.
The backbone of the new weapon family is the 5.56 mm HK433 assault rifle, although other calibres such as 7.62x51 mm (HK231), 7.62x39 mm (HK123), and 300 BLK may be also offered.
The HK433 is a gas-operated weapon with a short-stroke gas piston system, using a locked rotating bolt head. The monolithic upper receiver is made of aluminium and features a long NATO Accessory Rail (NAR: STANAG 4694). Infrared-absorbing coatings are also an option.
The weapon is equipped with a slim-line handguard with Picatinny/NAR rail in the six o'clock position and HKey interfaces on the three and nine o'clock positions. There is also a GLM/GLM A1 and HK269 grenade launcher attachment interface.
The charging handle is flat with integrated forward assist function and the rifle is fully ambidextrous.
The safety switch has three positions: safe, single fire, and full auto (rate of fire is 700 rpm). As per the the Bundeswehr requirement, the cocking of the rifle is possible in all positions.
Heckler & Koch is offering two variants of the HK433: one with a G36-type magazine release lever and one with an HK416/AR-15 magazine release pushbutton. In both cases the bolt hold open/release lever is integrated with the front part of the trigger guard.
The rifle is offered with 280, 318, 368, 421, 480, and 503 mm (11-, 12.5-, 14.5-, 16.5-, 18.9- and 20-inch) cold-hammered, 178 mm right-hand twist, six-groove barrels with hard chromium plating, equipped with an adjustable gas port for a sound suppressor.
The barrels are exchangeable by the user and are equipped with an M15x1 muzzle thread for a blank firing attachment (BFA).
