On 13 January 2017 US president Barack Obama signed an executive decree extending all US sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Crimea and military involvement in eastern Ukraine by another year to March 2018.
These include a series of economic sanctions targeting individual Russian companies and individuals, including the sectoral sanctions, introduced in July 2014, which target oil and gas, financial, and defence manufacturing sectors. However, in an interview with the Times of London, published on 16 January, US president-elect Donald Trump said that he would consider removing US sanctions against Russia in exchange for a nuclear arms reduction deal.
