Kuwaiti Abrams upgrade contract awarded

19 December 2016

The first contract for Kuwait's M1A2 Abrams tank upgrade programme was announced by the US Department of Defence (DoD) on 16 December, just four days after the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the proposed deal.

The DoD said General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) had been awarded a USD82.4 million contract to convert an unspecified number of Kuwait's M1A2 tanks to the M1A2S configuration. It did not state when the work was expected to be completed.

The DSCA notification said Kuwait's fleet of 218 M1A2 tanks will receive new equipment that includes CROWS II and CSAMM weapon mounts and "special armour" as part of a proposed package estimated to be worth USD1.7 billion and subject to Congressional approval.
