MMCM programme advances but France, UK, set different headings

26 October 2016

Key Points

  • An industry team led by Thales is leading the MMCM programme
  • Two prototype systems are due for delivery in 2019

France and the United Kingdom have formally committed to proceed with the next stages of the joint Maritime Mine Countermeasures (MMCM) programme, covering the development, build and qualification of two prototype offboard MCM systems for trials and evaluation by the French Navy (Marine Nationale) and the UK Royal Navy (RN).

However, while France expects the MMCM demonstrator effort to yield a production standard offboard MCM suite as the centrepiece of its next-generation Système de Lutte Anti-Mines - Futur (SLAM-F) programme, the UK is less committal as regards the potential pull-through of the MMCM 'system of systems' into its future MCM and Hydrographic Capability (MHC) programme.
