Update: Chinese operations prompt protests from Japan, Vietnam

06 January 2016

In late December concerns were expressed in Japan over three China Coast Guard vessels that had entered waters within 12 n miles of the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. The uninhabited islands are in the East China Sea, 330 km from China's coast, 170 km northwest of the Japanese island of Ishigaki and a similar distance north of Taiwan. While Japan has nominal control of the islands, China claims sovereignty and coastguard vessels from the two countries have frequently challenged each other in the surrounding waters.

On this occasion one of the Chinese vessels was a converted Type 053H2G/Jiangwei 1-class frigate transferred from the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).
