As the US Navy (USN) finalises its acquisition strategy for procuring 20 frigates beginning in 2019, the chief acquisition officer in charge of the navy's small surface combatants told IHS Jane's on 14 April that the framework sets forth opportunities for structuring contracts, but does not layout an imperative to downselect to a single shipyard.

"That decision is somewhere downstream, whether we're going to maintain [two seaframes] or downselect," Rear Admiral Brian Antonio, programme executive officer (PEO) for Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), told IHS Jane's .
