22 May 2014

Elbit Systems unveiled a 120 mm mortar system for unstabilised lightweight vehicles at Israel's International Fire Conference.

The new Soltam Spear features a soft-recoil system that reduces the firing load of the mortar from the traditional 120 tons to less than 10 tons. This enables the mortar to be mounted and fired from the back of light utility vehicles such as the Humvee or Land Rover Defender 110 without the need to lower stabilisers to the ground or dismount the mortar.

"This capability significantly improves the manoeuvrability and operational performance of infantry forces, as it delivers immediate indirect artillery support for effectively engaging a wide range of targets," said Elbit.
