Mexican Navy increasing coast guard capabilities

02 April 2014

The Mexican Navy on 1 April launched a new port security and protection scheme that includes the establishment of 19 Port Protection Naval Units (Unidades Navales de Protección Portuaria: UNAPROP).

Each UNAPROP will initially include a marine section and will expand according to operational requirements. A test-bed unit has been in place at the Pacific port of Manzanillo, Colima, to establish operational requirements.

Local sources told IHS Jane's that so far the requirements include ISR systems such as command, control, and communications equipment, closed-circuit televisions, forward-looking infrared cameras, and small unmanned aerial vehicles. It is to also include harbour and inshore patrol boats.
